The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a global professional society for engineering technology community based in Britain, is set to begin a pilot for providing professional qualifications. The IET, which provides certifications like the ICT Technician, Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer and Chartered Engineer, will launch the ICT Technician’s certification in India on a pilot basis.IET is in talks with a few top IT firms. The IET certification will help companies find their future managers, he said, as the certification not only gives an indication of the individual’s professional prowess, but also indicates that the person has strong communication skills. The ICT certification is expected to cost about Rs 8,000.
About IET
The IET is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, with more than 150,000 members in 127 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The IET provides a global knowledge network to facilitate the exchange of ideas and promote the positive role of science, engineering and technology in the world.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is a British professional body for those working in engineering and technology in the United Kingdom and worldwide. It was formed from two separate institutions: the Institution of Electrical Engineers, dating back to 1871, and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers dating back to 1884. Worldwide membership is in excess of 153,000. As of October 2009, the president was Professor Christopher Snowden and the chief executive and secretary was Nigel Fine. The Institution's main offices are in Savoy Place, London, and Michael Faraday House, Stevenage. It also has premises in Birmingham, Glasgow, Edison, Beijing, Hong Kong and Bangalore.
The IET is the second largest engineering institution in the world (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) of the USA is the largest). The IET has the authority to establish professional registration of engineers through the Engineering Council. The IEEE does not have the authority to replicate the registration process in its complementary environment. The IET is registered as a charity in England & Wales and in Scotland.

This signing is part of a two-day conference titled ‘Global Engineering and Technology Leadership Summit 2010' held in Bangalore. Christopher Snowden, President, IET, said, “The signing of agreement between IEt and IEI will foster close cooperation in the future.
It will link engineering and technological knowledge between India and the global platform.” Also speaking at the event was Major General (retired) R.K. Singh, Secretary and Director General of IEI, who said that “this is a momentous occasion to join hands with the IET.
The objective of the conference was to explore how leadership in science and technology is changing the world we live in. The conference was organized to bring together engineering and technological leaders from their respective spheres and provide networking opportunities. The London-based Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which certifies professional excellence worldwide, will offer its expertise to Indian engineers for global recognition.
As a not-for-profit organisation, IET offers the maintenance of professional engineering standards. As a global network, the institution disseminates knowledge and information to its 150,000 members in 127 countries and through 100 local networks in 34 countries, including India.
Through its India local network, IET promotes engineering and technology and seeks to raise awareness of the profession, which occupies the centre-stage of a nation's economic development spawning infrastructure, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, services and healthcare among others to improve living standards.
In association with the Engineering Council UK, the regulatory authority for registration of professional engineers and technicians in Britain, IET will offer its Indian chapter members an assessment opportunity to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Engineering Technical (EngTech) or ICT Technician (ICTTech).
Besides recognition of one's expertise and hard work, the benefits of professional engineering qualification for Indian engineers are bright career prospects, greater influence within their organisation and industry and access to life-long learning.
With about 2,500 members, IET's India chapter plans to work with academia, research and development (R&D) organisations, large industries and manufacturing firms and state-run enterprises to create an eco-system for building high quality engineers and leverage the latest developments in science and technology to produce a world class talent pool.
