The West Bengal State Centre of the Institution in association with Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur, Howrah, organized a two day All India Seminar on ‘Recent Advancement in Robotics & Mechatronics’, under the aegis of Mechanical Engineering Division, during August 19-20, 2011. Mr Archan Kusum Majumdar, Chairman of the Centre, extended a hearty welcome and elaborated the theme of the Seminar. The
Chief Guest, Prof A K Roy, Vice Chancellor, BESU, spoke about the evolution of robotics. He critically emphasized the need of
mechatronics pertinent to state-of-the-art technologies like missile technology, mining exploration, robotic surgery, under-water robotics for oceanography, etc. Prof (Dr) N R Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, CATE, IEI, highlighted various applications of mechatronics pertinent to domestic day to day gadgets to automobile industries. Prof S K Saha, from IIT Delhi, in his Keynote address, ascertained that technology should be much more
proximal to mankind being the ultimate end-user. Papers on various sub-themes were presented and discussed during technical sessions. Recommendations that emerged included : Expertise has to be inculcated to the student, researchers and
practicing engineers and to achieve the same, School of Mechatronics and Robotics of BESU, Shibpur, may be considered as a right place for attainment. Being an emergent area, the subject may be included in the curricula of The Institution of Engineers (India), in the stream of Mechanical Engineering / Production Engineering.
